Inactive License Renewal
If you are not practicing medicine in California, you may renew your license under an Inactive status ( Business and Professions Code sections 700-704). You will still be required to renew your license every two years. You will not be required to comply with the Continuing Medical Education requirements.
Note: You may not engage in the practice of medicine while on Inactive status.
How to Renew an Inactive License
If you are not actively practicing medicine in the State of California, you must renew your license on an inactive status (Business and Professions Code section 700).
Renew Online
You are eligible to renew your license if your license expires within the next 180 days OR your license expired less than five years ago. All licenses that expire June 30, 2025, or later, must renew online
You must answer all the renewal questions and pay the renewal fee online using BreEZe Online Services. The renewal questions include:
- Physician Survey
- Financial Interest Statement
- Disciplinary Action/Conviction Disclosure
Renew by Mail
If your license expires before June 30, 2025, you may renew by mail. All licenses that expire June 30, 2025, or later, must renew online.
Once you receive the paper Renewal Notice in the mail, you may submit the Renewal Notice and fees directly to the Board by mailing the documents to:

The renewal notice includes:
- Financial Interest Statement
- Disciplinary Action/Conviction Disclosure
